Talented. Dedicated. Caring. The team at Chico Animal Hospital believes, passionately, in providing your pet with the best care possible. Because to us, you both are family. Now, meet the team by your side.
Dr. Steven Dennis
Dr. Steven Dennis is a U.C. Davis graduate with more than 14 years experience. Most of his veterinary practice has been in California with a short stint in upstate New York. Dr. Dennis has been involved in many different types of medicine from emergency and critical care to mixed animal medicine including surgery, internal medicine, and cardiology.
Originally from Santa Barbara, Dr. Dennis and Dr. Kira have made Chico their new home. Dr. Dennis is currently dividing his time at Chico Animal Hospital between managing the practice and seeing patients. In his free time, Dr. Dennis enjoys riding his motorcycle.
Dr. Kyle Crowson
Dr. Kyle Crowson grew up in Chico and Durham before traveling to many parts of the U.S. and Canada for work and schooling after graduating from Chico High. He is a proud Clemson University graduate (Go Tigers!) and joined Chico Animal Hospital after practicing outside of Seattle.
Dr. Crowson found his calling to veterinary medicine after volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary and working as a field technician on a number of wildlife research projects. These projects all gave vastly different insights into what veterinary medicine encompassed, and after seeing how profound an impact proper and compassionate medicine can make to an animal’s well-being and quality of life, he set his mind to becoming a veterinarian and to make a positive difference in the lives of our four-legged friends. His veterinary interests include: endocrinology, behavioral modification, preventative care and client education, dentistry, and soft tissue surgery.
Having an affinity for fly fishing, backpacking, and hiking, the move back home to northern California was inevitable, but returning to the charming community of Chico is an exciting opportunity to give back to the community that helped shape him. When not exploring the outdoors, Dr. Crowson is a voracious reader, an avid record collector, and he enjoys cooking.
Dr. Kira has been practicing veterinary medicine since graduating from the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. Since graduation, Dr. Kira has lived and practiced in Phoenix Arizona, Davis, upstate New York, San Luis Obispo, Goleta and San Rafael. She is so happy to finally put down permanent roots and make Chico her forever home. Additionally, she and her husband, Dr. Dennis, are thrilled to fulfill their shared dream of owning a veterinary practice, and look forward to serving the pets of Chico and getting to know their 2 legged friends.
Dr. Kira’s interests include soft tissue surgery, ultrasound and dentistry. In addition to cats and dogs, she also works with rabbits, rodents and other small furry critters.
When not at the clinic, you may find Dr. Kira running, reading or riding a motorcycle. In addition to a husband, she lives with 4 cats, 23 tarantulas, 1 centipede, 2 scorpions, and a 24 year old boa constrictor named Snake she has had since vet school!

Denise joined the staff at the Chico Animal Hospital in February 2007. A local of Chico, she graduated from Chico Senor High in 1986, where she was also a graduate of the first ROP Animal Health course. This class solidified Denise’s decision to pursue a career in the veterinary field. She graduated from the Veterinary Technician course at Western Career College in 1987, and passed the State Board exam the same year. She has been working as a Registered Veterinary Technician ever since.
Denise’s daily responsibilities include managing our surgical patients, performing anesthesia, doing dental cleanings and caring for hospitalized patients. Along with our other technician and assistants, she maintains her own schedule of technician appointments. She appreciates the interaction she has with our clients and their four-legged family members. She enjoys being able to educate the new pet owner as well as assisting clients with keeping their senior pets happy and healthy.
Denise spends her free time with her finace, friends, and family. She likes live music, reality TV, and getting away to her “happy place,” Lake Tahoe.
Emily joined CAH in March of 2018 and has worked as both a receptionist and veterinary assistant. Emily grew up on a ranch with horses, cows and pigs. She was also an active member of both 4H and FFA. This experience combined with her ranching lifestyle inspired her to study to become a large animal veterinarian.
Now Emily has a Queensland Heeler named Izzy and a black cat named Odin. In her free time Emily takes Izzy on hikes. You may even catch her riding her horse!
Esme has been a part of the team since April of 2018. She first began her career in the animal field back in February of 2010 when she started interning at local clinics. She is now on the way to becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician! Esme grew up surrounded by cats and dogs, so her passion for helping them came naturally. She currently has 2 dogs, 4 cats and a Yellow-Headed Amazon parrot. While she can’t choose between cats and dogs, her favorite exotic animal is a leopard. Esme is often seen running around the hospital multi-tasking like a super hero!
Jae has been working at Chico Animal Hospital since February of 2019. Her bright hair makes her easy to spot. Jae grew up on a farm surrounded by horses, cows and chickens. She even raised snakes and fish! Now she has 1 dog named Moose, 1 cat named Fish, 2 rats named Calvin and Nadine, and a Betta fish named Audio! Jae’s favorite animal is an alpaca, which is one of the very few animals she has never owned!
In her free time, Jae enjoys going to concerts or eating spicy sushi.
Sara joined Chico Animal Hospital July 1st, 2019. The adoption of a very petite Chihuahua, Pixie, when Sara was young inspired her to pursue animal care. She felt a need to protect and be a voice for animal welfare. She is currently studying at Chico State and hopes to continue working in the animal care field.
Pictured is Sara with her dog Lila. They love going on morning runs and hikes in Bidwell. As much as Sara loves being active, she can’t say no to cuddling Lila in bed while binge-watching Netflix.
Random fun fact: Sara can wiggle her ears!!!
Neilsa has always been passionate about critters of all shapes and sizes, furry and scaley! She started her journey working as a pet sitter and at a doggy daycare in Monterey. She began working as a Veterinary Assistant, after obtaining a BS in Animal Science, and joined CAH in October of 2018. Neilsa enjoys going on hikes with her dog Nova or watching TV with her cat Nala.
Her “zoo” consists of 1 dog (Nova) 1 cat (Nala) 2 guinea pigs (Cotton & Delilah) 3 crested geckos (Quinn, Ember & Ash) 1 corn snake (Cornelius) and 1 hognose snake (Hermes) 1 beta fish (Colonel Mustard) and a tank of guppies, sucker fish, and an African Dwarf Frog. We don’t know how she keeps up with it either!
Chrissy works as both a receptionist and a vet assistant (best of both worlds!) She worked as a VA in Oroville before joining us earlier this year. As a local Chicoan, Chrissy enjoys the dog-friendly environment. She has 2 dogs at home named Nacho and Chica who do their best to keep Chrissy on her toes! She also has 2 cats named Mary Jane and Snow and 1 bunny named Mocha.
When’s she’s not running around at work, Chrissy enjoys sushi dates with her coworkers!
Dennise has been an employee of Chico Animal Hospital for 27 years. Many of us know her amazing smile from reception, but did you know she has also worked as a veterinary assistant, kennel staff and surgical assistant?
Dennise also has 4 dogs and 6 cats! She has been rescuing animals all her life and has a huge heart for all furry critters. In her free time, Dennise enjoys vacationing in Fort Bragg with a nice glass of wine.
Sam has been working reception for the hospital since July 2018. She began working with animals as a volunteer before interning and eventually joining the CAH family. Sam graduated from CSU Chico in 2017 as a Humanities major, but couldn’t ignore the call to help animals in need.
Sam has 1 cat named Poppy and 1 dog named Chloe. Poppy is Sam’s first cat, so she is learning something new every day. Growing up, dogs were the only household pets in Sam’s life until she started bringing random animals home off the street. This included stray cats, a stray dog, a rabbit, 6 parakeets and spiders from the garden. Will the trend continue? We shall see!
In her free time, Sam enjoys listening to true crime podcasts and watching hockey (go Sharks)!
Taylor joined us in October of 2019 as a Customer Service Representative. She is currently studying to become an elementary school teacher.
Growing up, Taylor was active in both 4H and FFA. She raised steers and worked with pigs. The baby piglets were her favorite!
Taylor is the proud owner of a 10 month old kitten named Tux. In her free time, Taylor loves to test out new bread recipes and bring them to the clinic for everyone to taste-test!
Caitlyn joined us in June of 2018. She got her start in the animal care field by volunteering at shelters before joining a humane society. After a few years she decided to try her hand at grooming and doggy day cares (She’s basically done everything!) Now Caitlyn runs our kennel area, medical inventory and assists with medical procedures. Caitlyn really is a jack of all trades!
At home, Caitlyn enjoys the company of two kitties, named Bruce and Harvey, and a dog named Winston. In her free time Caitlyn enjoys watching Sci-Fi and action movies. Her favorite is “Back to the Future”! She even has a tattoo of a film reel and projector.
Carly joined the team in October of 2019. Carly is currently studying Ag. Crop Science and Ag. Business at CSU Chico. She hopes to become a Pest Control Adviser just like her dad.
She is the proud owner of a Pinktoe Tarantula named 8-ball and a 13 year old tortie kitty named Annie. Carly adopted 8-ball in March and will be celebrating her 1st birthday next month! Do you think we should throw a party?
Her hobbies include going to the gym, painting and playing card games with friends.
Fun fact: She has been playing piano for 13 years! Her favorite music genre is alternative pop.
Jessica originally studied to work as a nurse assistant and dietician. She decided to switch fields to zoology and has been working as a kennel assistant here since June ’18. Jessica’s passion for all things cute and creepy means she owns some interesting pets! She owns 2 cats, 1 Hognose snake, 1 Day Gecko, 1 Leopard Gecko, 1 Jackson Chameleon and 5 Tarantulas.
Priscilla first came to us in 2011 when she was about 5 months old. She had been hit by a car and unfortunately her leg was too damaged to save. Her previous owners surrendered her to us and she has been here ever since. Now she spends the majority of her time napping in the doctor’s office and running away from our attempts to love on her. Despite her hard to get attitude she secretly loves the attention!
Meet Lizzie! She has been with Chico Animal Hospital since she was just a kitten! She was first found as a stray running around the streets. She joined our crew at just 8 weeks old! These days Lizzie spends time sitting on keyboards while we type and stealing our chairs (because where else would be better?).
Meet Tinkerbell (or Stinky Tinky as she is referred to by staff). Tinkerbell came to live with us in 2007 after she had been hit by a car. Unfortunately her leg was too damaged to save and her
previous owners surrendered her to us. Ever since she has been scouring the hospital looking for cheese or other snacks to steal from staff. Just don’t try and stop her or you might be in for a stinky surprise!!
