Our Doctors:

Dr. Craig Callen

Dr. Craig CallenDr. Craig Callen was born and raised in Montana.  As far back as he can remember, he has always loved animals and has always wanted to be a veterinarian.  He graduated summa cum laude from undergraduate school at Washington State University, and from the veterinary college at Colorado State University in 1981.  He practiced for 9 years in Montana before moving on to California.  He purchased the Chico Animal Hospital in 1991.  Always wanting to be on the cutting edge, Dr. Callen became the first veterinarian in the Chico area to become certified in veterinary acupuncture, along with being the first to become certified in the Penn Hip evaluation for canine hip dysplasia.  He is now in the process of becoming certified in Chinese herbal medicine for animals.

Dr. Callen is married and has three children (i.e.- three Golden Retrievers!!)  Whenever he has a spare moment, he enjoys archeology, traveling, fine wines, and relaxing at his mountain home, enjoying all the beauty that nature has to offer.

Dr. Colleen Prather:

Dr. Prather Has now joined our clinic. You may recognize her from working at another veterinary  clinic here in Chico, where she developed quite a cliental from her professional, easy going style of veterinary medicine.  We feel very fortunate. that she is at the Chico Animal Hospital.

Dr. Prather graduated from the U.C. Davis veterinary college in 1994.  She practiced in Sonora for a while before moving to Chico.

Dr. Prather, along with her Practice of traditonal veterinary medicine, also does acupuncture and physical rehabilitation therapy on animals. She is also becoming a certified doctor of herbal medicine for animals.

Dr. Prather enjoys skiing, running, mountian biking and spending time with her son, Kade, as well as her cats and dog.

Our office staff:

Lisa House

Lisa HouseLisa has worked for the Chico Animal Hospital for more than 22 years!! You can tell that she is a person who has always loved animals (as she has quite an assortment of pets at her place!) She is married and has two children and two grandchildren.  Lisa enjoys horseback riding, going to the Oregon coast and spending time with her family. She owns a beautiful piece of property on the Oregon coast and hopes to retire there someday (if we ever let her leave!)

Dennise Trotter

Dennise came to the Chico Animal Hospital as an intern through the ROP Veterinary Assisting Program.  After her graduation in July 1992, she joined the Chico Animal Hospital team and has been here since.  She has worked in all areas of the hospital, but now she can be found up front working the reception desk.
When Dennise is not working, you can find her cooking for friends and family, exploring Bidwell Park, or visiting the wine regions with her husband, Bryan.

Mallory Clark

Her duties have included all aspects of the hospital, from care of the animal boarders, to the front desk receptionist, to assisting the doctors during examinations and procedures.

She graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 2002 and then continued her education graduating with a B.S. in Agriculture with an Animal Science option in 2007. Mallory married her husband Trenton and they became proud parents of a beautiful baby boy in late 2010.

During her free time you can find Mallory at the dog park with her family and their Boston Terrier, Rocky. She also enjoys spending quality time with her son watching him grow up right before her eyes.

Dede Sterling

DedeDede has over 27 years of experience in the veterinary field.  Nineteen of them have been here at the Chico Animal Hospital.  She really loves her job here at the hospital- you can really tell that by the way she interacts with both the pets and their owners.  She has been a huge animal lover all of her life, and being their advocate is natural to her.  She also enjoys the connection with other people that comes when they share their own.love for their pets.

Dede has been a volunteer for many years, raising and helping numerous different species of orphaned or injured wildlife.  She is member of Defenders Of Wildlife (since 1988,) the A.S.P.C.A,, Bidwell Wildlife, and the A.C.L.U..

Her own pets include 2 rescues: Maria, a Lab cross, and Daisy, a Rat Terrier.  She also has a Doxie, Violet. Some of the things that she enjoys outside of the clinic are good times with her friends and family, nature hikes, walking the dogs to the creek, bird watching, gardening and music.

Denise Beltran

Denise joined the staff at the Chico Animal Hospital in February 2007. A local of Chico, she graduated from Chico Senor High in 1986, where she was also a graduate of the first ROP Animal Health course. This class solidified Denise’s decision to pursue a career in the veterinary field. She graduated from the Veterinary Technician course at Western Career College in 1987, and passed the State Board exam the same year. She has been working as a Registered Veterinary Technician ever since.

Denise’s daily responsibilities range from managing our surgical patients, performing our dental cleanings, to handling her own appointments. She appreciates the interaction she has with our clients and their four-legged family members. She enjoys being able to educate the new pet owner as well as assisting clients with keeping the senior pets happy and healthy.

Denise spends her free time with her boyfriend, friends, and family. She likes live music, reality TV, and getting away to her “happy place,” Lake Tahoe.

Our excellent boarding staff:

Tish McLaughlin

Tish, or Mom as she is known to everyone at the clinic, joined the Chico Animal Hospital in 1992 as an animal caregiver.  If you have ever had the pleasure of having your pet stay at our clinic or boarding facility, you will know what great care and personal attention that she gives each and every animal staying here.  We have many clients who tell us that they can tell that their pet is looking forward to staying at the clinic so that they can play with Auntie Tish.  We feel very fortunate that she is part of the hospital staff.

Tish has three daughters, one son, and five grandsons.  When she is not working at the clinic, or playing grandmother, Tish enjoys gardening (just give her some dirt and watch her go!!,) and cooking.

Sylvia deVlaming

Sylvia is the “new kid” at the clinic, accepting a position of animal caregiver after being a client here at the clinic for several years.  She loves interacting with both the hospitalized animals and the animals that are in our boarding facility.  You can tell that the animals enjoy the extra attention that she gives them. Sylvia and her husband, Todd, have a child, Will, and a dog, Scotty, at home that keeps them both busy.  In her spare time, Sylvia enjoys volunteering in the classroom at her son’s school, along with being very involved with the school’s P.T.A...
